It Is Well With My Soul…A new angel wing mixed media painting…

He will cover you with his feathers and under his wings you will find refuge, his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. Psalm 91:4

It Is Well With My Soul…It Is Well…These words from an old hymn resinate with me, much like a healing salve on a wound, or a drink when very thirsty….satisfying.  The words are part of an old hymn by Horatio G. Stafford, written in 1873.

I appreciate stories.  They add depth, insite and understanding.  Much like marrow to the bones, it is the “meat” behind the outer shell. Also, much like a story behind a painting, it giving a  deeper appreciation of the piece, as well as personal inspiration.  Much like, Horatio’s story behind his beloved hymn…

Mr. Spafford was a wealthy Chicago lawyer, to whom mourned the loss of his son in 1870.  A year later, endured the Chicago fire, with much financial loss.  As a gift and a greatly needed respite for his wife, himself and four daughters, he planned a boat voyage through Europe.  At departure, he was held back due to business, yet sent his family along, promising to reunite soon…

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.
Psalm 46:1-2

The reuniting was minus four…the vessel was struck at sea, his daughters, went home to be with there heavenly father.  The message received from his wife, “Saved alone”.

As Horatio boarded a ship to join his grieving wife, he traveled the very path where his daughters lives seized…

And he wrote…When peace like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like billows roll.  Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, it is well with my soul….

“Some day you’re gonna look back on this moment of your life as such a sweet time of grieving. You’ll see that you were in mourning and your heart was broken, but your life was changing…”
~ Elizabeth Gilbert

My appreciation deepened as I learned the story behind the hymn.  As I grow, trials still happen, yet they lesson in power over my life, by choice…Horacio had a choice…turn bitter, depressed, withdrawn, even vengeful , yet, he choose light.  He choose on that exact oceans burial ground to sing with his soul…

His choice back in the 1800’s has ripple effects today in my life, as well as many others in this generation.  Powerful!  Our choices effect others…

Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue and if there be any praise, think on these things.
~ phil. 4:8

The story behind my painting.  Well, for starters, my soul has always been drawn to light.  Especially in times of darkness.  Whenever I felt felt in the absolute depths of darkness, this song has been my salve, my healing oil to my soul…I love bathing in the words.  It has brought; hope, encouragement and light.  It has lifted me, sometimes even carrying me…

So as I painted, I meditated on all that is lovely…peace, light, choices , good music, family.  This can be a hard muscle to activate at times.  It can involve retraining…It is a choice.  A choice to focus on what is good in life.  Just as Horacio did and I am benefiting from today.  The wings in my painting, represent being lifted, carried and protected.  The lightness of the painting, symbolizes peace, the small stone in the middle of the wings represents, a glimmer of hope, a light for you to cling onto as you are being carried.  The words then in a bolder shade…It Is Well With My Soul…

In boldness, I make the choice to meditate on these things, even when sometimes in life I too have stopped and looked out at my own sea of sadness , I go back to the verse once again…

When peace like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like billows roll.  Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, it is well with my soul….

Until soon…H

Pretty much anyone close to me knows my love of Country Living fairs.  A number of years ago, when I was beginning to step out again into the art world, I visited the Country Living Fair in Columbus, OH. A much needed respite, at the time I said a prayer…..”Dear lord, please make it possible to have my art featured here some day”. With hard work, perseverance and a ton of prayer it has been answered!  Looking so forward to this weekend with my daughter Claire who has been such an instrumental part of the journey.  Closer to the date I’ll post my booth number so you can find me!  In the mean time here’s a few items I’ll be selling at the fair.  You can also purchase my artwork online by clicking on the Etsy button to the right.  Stay tuned a new website is coming with a store attached…. _dsc0470 _dsc0477 _dsc0478 _dsc0487 _dsc0492 _dsc0494 _dsc0498 _dsc0499 _dsc0500

~ Elenor Roosevelt

So true, thank you Elenor!  Sitting down in January, my birth month, I began to paint this birthday painting…At times it felt, well, odd.  Naturally being a giver, throughout the day I think of what to paint to encourage and give to my children and others.  Growing up in a very turbulent home life, art, had always been my sanctuary. Creating brought me; hope, peace and survival. ..It was something nourishing and positive…

As I look back, what could have been so simple, I made complicated.  I resisted, in parts, one of the most profound gifts that I had been given, that which is a key part of my identity, CREATIVITY.

Then, I often thought, ” How does this fit into school and my family…they all seemed to be receiving so much praise for accolades in Science, Math and honors”, I’m the creative black sheep”. I ran these tapes through my brain, toxic thoughts for many years that became my song.  I ,”believed”, if I fit that structure I would be loved more…

Buzzzz….Wrong answer, the battle was in my mind.  As an adult, I praise my God, that I realize where those thoughts were coming from and not a pit I wanted to live in.

" Sing to him a new song; play skillfully with a shout of joy" ~ Psalm 33:3

” Sing to him a new song; play skillfully with a shout of joy” ~ Psalm 33:3

(Breathing deeply)…Self care isn’t selfish, I feel I need to write that again…Self care isn’t selfish. It is one of the most unselfish things one can do.  Being emotionally, physically, spiritually balanced helps me, but also, helps those around me.  A whole healed person and the messy story they write on perseverance can touch someone else and it can snowball in a positive way.  Hey, I want to be apart of that snowball fight!

They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. ~ Rev. 12:11

They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. ~ Rev. 12:11

So, at age 44, I celebrate all 44 of these growing in years.  This is what I love about mixed media; I get to play with color joyfully, as I did in my youth…with abandon.  In peace and playfulness, I paint with my hands. I get to build layers on the canvas similar to the layers of years of my life…Some weathering, some looking better with age, wisdom and antiquing.

I’ve expressed my femininity in this piece.  “I love pink and I’m proud!”.  I also draw on what I have cherished…Great-grandmother’s lace and buttons.  They highlight the painting.  As I added these pieces in, I recalled the same joyful excitement of discovering them for the first time, as I did in my youth. In the 1800’s as she created the lace and sewed the buttons to her garments, little did she know she would be blessing another generation…

" What we do in life echoes in eternity" ~Gladiator

” What we do in life echoes in eternity” ~Gladiator

Now I get to carry the responsibility of the blessing.  A good place to be, to see art, as your personal responsibility…

What does the chair in the painting have to do with anything?  This is what I love so much about art. It can be enjoyed at face value and deeply appreciated when the story behind it is revealed, much like people!  As a formally trained Interior Designer, I appreciate the lines.  In college I enjoyed learning about the Art History of a piece.  How whatever going on politically  influenced the art world as well.  At a deeper level, where I like to percolate, I refer back to self care…I struggled with worthiness as a child.  Brew up a difficult childhood and mix in a heaping dose of rejection and ta-da, you brew a perfect cup of low self esteem.  FYI, I no longer drink from that vessel, it was way too bitter!  I now enjoy the sweetness of life….In young  life I didn’t feel worthy to ever have a chair as beautiful as the ones I poured over in design and Art History books.  I was fascinated with the style and colors.

Buzz….wrong answer again….I am worthy to enjoy a beautiful chair (self care) and a sweet cup of tea and a balanced life.  The chair, in the painting, with my great-grandmother’s lace balloon tied to it, FYI, sits in my hallway, I smile and breath deeply in a content fashion each morning as I brush past…content knowing I was created to open my gift, layer by layer, pull it out of my the box it was given to me in and display it, share it, treasure it with the world.  For I know now I was CREATED to CREATE.

Celebrating a Happy, Happy Birthday…

Until soon, Heather

Maybe that’s because I’m female and don’t feel the pressure to do something amazing like my guy friends have mentioned.  Honestly, it truly is the thought that counts!  Can I get an amen ladies?!

I love exchanging valentines still, the vintage type.  I love the glitter and pink and the candy hearts and seeing children toting a homemade valentine exchange box under their arms as the skip to school happily, for perhaps, a change.

I like the light it brings in the midst of winter doldrums. So, to you I say, “Have a blessed Valentine’s day filled with all the glitter, paper dollies and candy heart that you can possibly stand!  Oh and enjoy a few decorating images from around my home!

Until soon!

Historic side door entry way Christmas decor

Hello all!  Finally a snow fall in my area of Ohio.  Please enjoy a few shots from my side entry door.  I hung a few pictures on the door that is no longer used.  I’m guessing it was once used for ice and milk delivery as it leads to an old pantry.  Having fun researching this house!
